GOLF – An all-new academy at Royal Golf Club is in the pipeline, with the aim of discovering and honing promising talents in Bahrain and preparing them to compete in regional and international championships.
This was revealed by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), and it comes in implementation of the directives of His Majesty the King’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooheji received Royal Golf Club chairman Captain Waleed Al Alawi to discuss the initial steps to establish the specialised golf academy.
Al Kooheji welcomed the Royal Golf Club delegation, praising the bilateral co-operation between the two sides.
They discussed the establishment of the golf academy, which will enhance the game’s achievements. He emphasised that the BOC attaches great importance to golf, considering it a rapidly growing sport in Bahrain and the region.
Al Kooheji pointed out that the establishment of the academy represents a strategic step towards preparing a new generation of players capable of representing the kingdom in various international forums.
For his part, Captain Al Alawi praised Shaikh Nasser’s directives to establish the academy, expressing his thanks and appreciation to the BOC for its continuous support and fruitful co-operation with the Royal Golf Club.
He highlighted that the academy project will contribute to building a strong foundation for the game, enhancing Bahrain’s position on the global golf map.
This new academy at Royal Golf Club is one of a handful of major projects being planned to further develop the golf infrastructure in the kingdom.
Earlier this year in February, it was announced that former Masters champion Sergio Garcia from Spain has partnered with Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club to design a new world-class 18-hole championship golf course at the club.
Meanwhile, in December of last year, it was revealed that a new 18-hole golf course is set to be built at Al Areen by real estate developer Al Areen Holding Company, who have entered into an agreement with Olazabal Design, the golf course design company of Spanish star golfer Jose Maria Olazabal.
Bahrain also continues to host one of the most prestigious international golf tournaments in the region with its DP World Tour event, the Bahrain Championship.
The next edition of the competition is set to take place from January 29 to February 1 in 2026 at Royal Golf Club.
It is part of the new DP World Tour season calendar, which features at least 42 tournaments in 25 different countries worldwide.
The Bahrain Championship will be part of the campaign’s international swing, which also features tournaments in the UAE, Kenya, and South Africa.
Next year’s event will be the third edition of the kingdom’s biggest golf competition, which attracts top players from around the world.
