WEIGHTLIFTING – BAHRAIN’S Paris 2024 Olympics bronze-medallist Gor Minasyan will be going for gold today in the men’s over-110kg category at the 2025 IWF World Championships, currently taking place in Forde, Norway.
Minasyan will be one of 10 lifters in their weight division’s A group competition, which gets underway at 5pm, Bahrain time.
Minasyan will be up against a top-class field, headlined by last year’s world champion in the over-109kg category Varazdat Lalayan from Armenia. The field also includes Ali Davoudi from Iran, who was the silver-medallist from the 2024 worlds, his countryman Alireza Yousefi, David Andrew Liti from New Zealand, Bakari Turmanidze from Georgia, Aaron Andrew Williams from the US, Moayad Alnajjar from the UAE, and South Koreans Yangjae Lee and Yeonghwan Song.
Minasyan will be gunning for his third worlds medal for Bahrain, having claimed silver in 2022 and bronze in 2023, both in the over-109kg category.
In last year’s IWF World Championships hosted by the kingdom, Minasyan narrowly missed out on a place in the overall podium, but he came away with a silver for snatch.
Minasyan, who turns 31 later this month, will be looking to add another medal for Bahrain in Forde following the three claimed by Ingrid Vanesa Segura Grueso, who competed in the women’s 69kg category earlier this week.
Grueso captured a silver medal for clean and jerk while also taking two bronze medals for both snatch and total.
The 19-year-old was making her debut in the worlds, flying the kingdom’s flag.
