Terrifying videos have come out after an Air China flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a lithium battery inside a passenger's bag burst into flames, filling the cabin with smoke.
Flight CA139 had departed from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport at 9.47 am with 160 passengers, headed to South Korea’s Incheon International Airport when the incident occurred, according to reports.
Videos from onboard show the overhead compartment above the passengers in flames, as the flight crew attempts to douse them.
Air China said in a post on Weibo that “a lithium battery in a passenger’s carry-on luggage stored in the overhead compartment spontaneously ignited.”
The crew were able to extinguish the flames, with no injuries reported, but the flight was still diverted to Shanghai Pudong International Airport to “ensure flight safety,” according to Air China.
A passenger onboard the flight told local media that they heard a loud explosion before flames shot from the compartment.
A replacement flight took all the passengers to Seoul, Air China confirmed.
