A 70-year-old man from the Italian city of Vicenza has been charged with fraud after he allegedly pretended to be blind for more than 50 years to receive disability benefits.
According to reports, the man received disability benefits worth over €1 million (BD 440,700).
The fraud was discovered after Vicenza's financial police conducted cross-checks that raised suspicions. The police department then started following the man around for two months, during which they recorded him doing activities that were inconsistent with his alleged status.
The police recorded him performing gardening work with dangerous tools, walking freely around the city, shopping, and paying in cash without any assistance.
This evidence prompted the Public Prosecutor's Office to indict the man for fraud against the Italian state.
