The curtains rise today on what promises to be an exceptional week of theatre at the Bahrain National Museum and Cultural Hall.
The fourth edition of the Bahrain Theatre Festival, which will continue until November 10, will showcase five plays from five theatre groups, alongside book signings, readings and engaging discussions.
Organised by the Bahrain Theatre Union, in collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (Baca), the event celebrates a century of Bahraini theatre. It is being held under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
“The festival is set to open with a rich lineup of diverse theatrical performances and accompanying events, filled with art, thought and creativity, on the Bahraini stage. It will take place over seven days,” the union said in a statement.
“From powerful stage performances to intellectual and practical seminars, artistic workshops and the launch of a collection of distinguished publications, each day offers a unique experience worth attending and witnessing.”
The event kicks off this evening at the Cultural Hall at 6pm with the book signing of A History of Theatre – Abdulla Yusuf by author Musa Hassan, followed by the opening ceremony at 8pm.
A second book signing – accompanied by a critical reading – of Human Pulses in the Plays of Ismael Abdulla by Dr Abbas Al Qassab and Zahra Al Mansoor, will be held tomorrow at 6pm at the Bahrain National Museum.

The first theatrical performance of the festival – Bab Al Khatiya (The Gate to Sin) by Reef Theatre – will be held later on the same day at 8pm at the Cultural Hall.
On November 6, the theatre union will sign a memorandum of understanding with the British Council at 6pm at the Bahrain National Museum to exchange expertise, support the development of Bahraini theatre, and empower artists in the kingdom.

This will be followed by 0%, a play by Al Sawari Theatre, at the Cultural Hall at 8pm.

The next day, talented artists from Al Bayader Theatre will perform the play Al Qahqaha (Laughter) at the Cultural Hall at 8pm.
A discussion on the ‘Role of the Theatrical Movement in Sustainable Development’ will be held on Saturday at the museum at 5pm, followed by the book signing of From An Old Chair to Joy by Musa Hassan at 7pm.

The play Alzowba Kharej Al Fnjan (The Tempest Outside the Cup) will be held at the Cultural Hall at 8pm.

The final showcase, Arwah A’liqah (Trapped Souls) by DREAMS, will be held on Sunday at 8pm at Al Ayam Newspaper Hall.
The festival concludes on Monday with the closing ceremony at the Cultural Hall at 8pm.
The events are free to attend and open to all members of the public.
