TENNIS – Sergey Fomin from Uzbekistan was last night crowned men’s singles champion in the second Bahrain Men’s ITF World Tennis Tour M25 Manama tournament, which came to a close at the Public Security Officers Club in Gudaibiya.
Fourth-seeded Fomin took his crown after battling back from a set down to defeat fifth seed Olaf Pieczkowski from Poland 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in an exciting final.
Following the match, the pair were awarded their respective trophies by Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) president Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa and BTF vice-president Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, in the presence of other officials.
Fomin joined Jeffrey Hsu from Chinese Taipei and Karlis Ozolins from Latvia as title winners in the competition. Hsu and Ozolins had earlier claimed the men’s doubles crown on Saturday.
Fomin also followed in the footsteps of Nino Ehrenschneider from Germany, who won the men’s singles title in the first Bahrain Men’s ITF World Tennis Tour M15 Manama tournament, played earlier this month at the same venue.
Both competitions are part of a series of major international tennis events being hosted by the kingdom this month and next.
Bahrain is also set to stage the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group V at the BTF courts in Isa Town this week, before holding an ATP Challenger Tour event from November 23 to 29 at the Public Security Officers Club.
It will be a category 50 competition featuring top professionals from around the world who will be vying for a share of the $60,000 in total prize money.
