In a touching scene inside the courtroom – one that moved hearts before it brought tears – the parents of the late Hassan Al Mahari announced their decision to waive their right in a case that had shaken the Bahraini public conscience.
They did so purely for the sake of God, in faith and acceptance, recognising that the driver had not acted intentionally, but that it was a tragic human error without malice.
The grieving parents embodied the highest meanings of mercy and forgiveness, engraving an everlasting example in the record of genuine Bahraini and human values.
In a moment when anger was justified and grief was profound, they chose faith over fury, wisdom over emotion, and offered a rare lesson in human nobility.
Undoubtedly, their decision was not an easy one, for loss is painful and tragedy unforgettable. Yet those who forgive for the sake of God rise above their wounds. They chose to pardon in the spirit of the Quranic verse: “And to forgive is nearer to righteousness.”
They reminded society that forgiveness is not weakness, but the peak of strength, and that justice is not fulfilled by punishment alone, it reaches its highest form when blended with mercy.
Through their noble act, they restored balance to the scene. While the law takes its course, it is the spirit of the law that restores justice to its true human essence, reminding us that the goal of punishment is reform, not revenge and that mercy does not contradict justice, but completes it.
This paternal and humane gesture will surely inspire everyone who has lost a loved one due to an unintended mistake, to learn that forgiveness extinguishes the flames of hatred and plants indescribable peace within the heart. It also sends a profound message to the community: that Bahrain will forever remain a land of compassion and humanity, where hearts are filled with faith and minds guided by wisdom.
May God have mercy on the child and grant him paradise, and may He reward his parents for their patience and fortitude.
Today, they stand as symbols of awareness, forgiveness and the true embodiment of ‘Forgiveness is noble’ and of the Spirit of the Law, which balances justice with mercy and legal judgement with the wisdom of the heart.
This painful incident remains a sincere call to review the school transportation system, tighten the regulations for licensing vehicles used to transport children, and ensure they undergo continuous monitoring and inspection to protect the safety of young lives.
Families, too, must verify the legality of the drivers and vehicles that carry their children daily. Schools and nurseries also bear a duty to notify parents immediately if a student using school transportation is absent.
Indeed, prevention and oversight are the other face of mercy, just as forgiveness saves hearts from hatred, discipline saves lives from danger.
Between these two virtues, the Spirit of the Law remains alive, just and compassionate.
