Tributes poured in yesterday for former Pakistan’s Ambassador to Bahrain Lieutenant General (retired) Muhammad Shafiq who passed away at the weekend.
The veteran military officer served as a diplomat between 2000 and 2002.
He died on Saturday and was laid to rest with full military honours at the Army Graveyard, Rawalpindi.
The Kohat-born diplomat served as Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 1999 to 2000, 17 Sindh and 12 Punjab Regiments, and later as Commander 31 Corps Bahawalpur.
He leaves behind three sons, Colonel Mazhar Shafiq, Imran Shafiq and Major Haroon Shafiq.
Former Pakistan Club Bahrain chairman Mahmood Rafique described the envoy as ‘an honest man and a professional soldier who also happened to be the teacher of late Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf’.
“Lieutenant General (retired) Muhammad Shafiq had spearheaded and supervised the construction of Pakistan’s embassy and residence project during his time as our ambassador,” said the long-time resident yesterday.
“He would be remembered as one of the most active ambassadors, working tirelessly for the welfare and the well-being of the community.
“During his tenure, Pakistan-Bahrain ties reached new heights of excellence in diplomacy, trade, investments and other areas of common interest.”
