A 42-year-old man in Kerala, India, was found dead on Sunday in a suspected suicide. The incident occurred two days after a woman shared a video on social media accusing him of sexual misconduct during a bus journey.
On Monday, police booked the woman on charges of abetment of suicide. The State Human Rights Commission has directed the North Kerala Deputy Inspector General to launch an investigation and submit a report within a week.
The deceased was a resident of Kozhikode. His family and friends alleged that he took his own life because he was distressed over the video, which had gone viral. Notably, no police complaint had been registered regarding the alleged incident on the bus.
Following his death, the woman who purportedly recorded the video told reporters: “While travelling by bus in Payyannur, I realised that a woman standing in front of the man was very uncomfortable. He was standing very close. He had seen me recording a selfie video and remained calm for a while. Later, when the rush on the bus eased, he again tried to stand close to me, and I recorded the incident again. I edited both videos and posted them as a single one.”
His family members stated he was shattered by the "social media trial" and was pushed to his death.
