Nine agreements have been signed between Bahrain and Cyprus to further consolidate their strong relations.
They were signed in the presence of His Majesty King Hamad and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, who held official talks at Gudaibiya Palace yesterday.
The wide-ranging memoranda of understanding will strengthen ties in crucial areas like defence, telecommunications, tourism and technology as well as maritime and air services.
During their talks in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, the King and the visiting leader discussed opportunities to enhance co-operation across key sectors, including economy, investment, trade, culture and tourism, while also addressing regional and international developments of mutual interest.
His Majesty pointed to the significance of the visit as it coincides with Bahrain presiding over the GCC and the Cyprus’ presidency of the European Union.
This will not only enable both countries to enhance their strategic partnership but also provide important opportunities for closer co-ordination at regional and international levels, the King said.
His Majesty said the visit will include the opening of the Cyprus Embassy and the convening of the Bahrain-Cyprus Business Forum between the chambers of commerce.
Bahrain values the pivotal role of Cyprus in Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as its supportive stance for just Arab issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, and its efforts to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of the Gaza Strip, His Majesty said.
President Christodoulides said his visit reflects ‘our shared determination’ to further strengthen relations.
He pointed out that bilateral ties have steadily expanded in recent years.
His Majesty and the visiting leader commended the signing of the agreements, which will contribute to supporting and developing joint work.
His Majesty hosted a luncheon in honour of the Cypriot President and the accompanying delegation.
The Mission of Honour accompanying President Christodoulides was headed by Industry and Commerce Minister Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro.
President Christodoulides earlier arrived in Bahrain and was received on arrival at Bahrain International Airport by Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani, Mr Fakhro and senior officials.
