The State of Kuwait commemorates Wednesday the World Cancer Day, raising awareness among the public about the disease and prevention means. The World Cancer Day is yet another chance to unify societal and international efforts to support cancer patients, attempt to reduce cancer-related deaths as well as promoting healthy lifestyle through awareness messages. An international conference against cancer was held in Paris on February 4, 2000.
Paris Declaration was approved and the World Cancer Day was launched with the aim of raising awareness about the disease and how individuals could contribute to minimising the impacts of cancer. The State of Kuwait pays a great attention to fighting cancer, establishing Kuwait Cancer Control Centre (KCCC) in 1968, a leading centre in the region offering up-to-date diagnostic and treatment methods. KCCC's Nuclear Medicine Department was awarded the European Quality Certificate in 2016 to be the first to get this award in the Gulf and Middle East regions.
KCCC includes Hussein Makki Al-Juma's Centre for Specialised Surgeries, Sheikha Badriya AlSabah Chemotherapy centre, Faisal Sultan bin Issa Center for Radiology and Radiotherapy, and Yaaqoub Behbehani laboratory building and bone marrow transplantation centre.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) honoured KCCC in 2018 in recognition of its efforts to fighting cancer by using most recent diagnostic and treatment technologies in nuclear medicine. On February 20, 2025, Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi signed a memorandum of understanding with the French Gustave Roussy hospital to develop health systems with the objective of providing the best health care for the public.
