TENNIS – Daniela Esina of Russia and Akhmadi Makhanov from Kazakhstan were yesterday crowned champions of their respective singles competitions in the J30 Manama ITF Bahrain Juniors tournament, which came to a close at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
Third-seeded Daniela secured the girls’ crown after defeating fifth seed Sofia Pyzhyanova 6-4, 7-5 in an all-Russian final, while second-seeded Akhmadi won the boys’ title after outplaying sixth seed Nikita Davidovsky from Russia 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile, the Russian tandem of Stefania Kadzova and Sofia Lomakina and the pairing of Javier Montes Jimenez from Spain and Tudor Alexandru Zecheru from Romania won their respective doubles championships.
Stefania and Sofia Lomakina lived up to their top-seeding and secured the girls’ doubles champions’ trophies with a hard-earned 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-8 win against fourth seeds Sophia Arpa from Malta and Saule Tamulynas from Estonia.
On the distaff, second seeds Javier and Tudor overcame the Russian duo of Iakov Mazin and Philip Smirnov 6-3, 6-3 to claim the boys’ doubles crown.
Following the four finals, the winners and runners-up were presented their respective trophies and medals in an awarding ceremony attended by BTF president Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa and BTF secretary general Fuad Al Rowaie.
The J30 Manama ITF Bahrain Juniors tournament is part of this year’s International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors Calendar.
It is one of three ITF junior events being hosted by the BTF this month.
Another J30 ITF tournament is scheduled to be played in the coming week, starting today, also at the BT.
