A young man who intervened during a mosque attack is being hailed as a hero after his actions prevented a greater tragedy during a deadly suicide bombing in Islamabad’s Tarlai area.
Aun Abbas, whose wedding preparations were underway at the time, was killed in the Friday attack at the Khadija Tul Kubra Imambargah compound on the outskirts of Pakistan's capital. The explosion claimed at least 32 lives and left more than 170 worshippers injured.
Abbas was praying at the mosque when the attacker entered the complex and opened fire on the congregation. The young man rushed towards the assailant near the entrance and grabbed him; moments later, the attacker detonated his explosives, killing Abbas and several others.
"We are heartbroken, but we are also proud that he gave his life to save many others. If the attacker had managed to enter further inside, the loss would have been far greater,” Abbas's brother told local media.
Islamabad authorities have arrested four people believed to have helped orchestrate the attack. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the bombing, the deadliest in Islamabad in more than a decade, in a statement released on the Telegram messaging app.
