Over the last week, iguanas have been falling from trees by the dozen following a significant cold snap in Florida, USA.
The sight of ‘cold-stunned’ lizards littering pavements has evidently sparked inspiration for some Floridians. Multiple videos on social media show creators using the reptiles as ingredients, specifically as toppings for pizzas and tacos.
Bucks Coal Fired, a pizzeria in North Palm Beach, has created an iguana-topped dish, dubbing the creation "the Everglades Pizza". Another content creator referred to the reptiles as the "chicken of the trees" while using the meat as a taco filling.
Iguanas rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature. When temperatures drop, their internal processes slow down, leading to a phenomenon known as 'cold stunning'. As Florida considers iguanas an invasive species, the humane killing of the reptiles is permitted under local law.
