BAHRAIN’S Al Hala suffered another heavy defeat yesterday in the eighth Arab Women Sports Tournament, currently taking place in Sharjah, the UAE.
The kingdom’s representatives, playing their penultimate fixture in their competition and still searching for a first victory, bowed to Al Fatat Sports Club from Kuwait 59-78.
Hala fell behind by double digits in the second quarter and tried valiantly to get back into contention. But Fatat closed the game strong and outscored the Bahrainis by 10, 21-11, in the final frame to secure their big win.
Hala’s young backcourt tandem of Bayan Salman and Aya Kamali finished with 16 points apiece in the contest. Fatat’s Alexus Johnson had a game-high 45 points while taking down 16 rebounds to spearhead her team, who also got 17 from Porsche Cherrelle Poole.
Hala will now be looking to at least close their participation in Sharjah on a positive note when they go up against hosts Sharjah Women’s Sports Club tomorrow at 1pm, Bahrain time.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s taekwondo jins are in action today. The kingdom’s athletes, representing Budaiya Club, include Dalia Jameil Alrawajfeh, Fatema Sadeq Kalawadh, Haleema Ghanem Albusaeedi, Hanan Yusuf Alsherooqi, Hanin Ahmed Alhooti, Sara Mahmood Jallab, and Ola Abdulaziz Aldoseri.
Aside from basketball and taekwondo, Bahrain also competed in the Emirates in shooting and archery, both with Riffa Club, as well as fencing with Busaiteen Club.
The nationals are amongst 63 clubs representing 16 countries across nine sports in this year’s Arab Women Sports Tournament, which is organised by Sharjah Women’s Sports under the patronage of wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Sharjah Family and Community Council chairperson Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi.
