BAHRAIN added three more medals yesterday, highlighted by one gold, in the taekwondo competitions of the eighth Arab Women Sports Tournament, currently taking place in Sharjah, the UAE.
Fatema Sadeq Kalawadh captured the title in the under-49kg category to spearhead the campaign on the first day of action for the kingdom’s taekwondo jins, who are representing Budaiya Club in the multi-sport meeting.
Kalawadh defeated Jordanian Sadeen Hamzeh in their final to come away with her title.
Meanwhile, the Bahrainis also added a silver and bronze medal yesterday. The silver was claimed by Hanan Yusuf Alsherooqi in the under-57kg category, where she lost to Fadia Mazi Khirfan in their gold medal contest.
The bronze medal was won by Sara Mahmood Jallab in the under-67kg class, who made it through to the semi-finals.
Action in the taekwondo competitions continue today.
The Bahraini jins’ three medals yesterday brought the kingdom’s delegation’s overall tally so far in Sharjah to nine medals, including four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals, as the tournament heads to its last two days of play.
Bahrain’s other gold medals were won in shooting with the Riffa Club trio of Safa Mohamed Aldoseri, Noof Khalil Aldoseri, and Marwa Hamid Alamairi capturing the title in the 10m air rifle teams’ competition and Safa adding another gold in the individual event. The third gold in shooting was claimed by the triumvirate of Qamar Ali, Mooza Abdulrahim Ali, and Badreya Ebrahim Alatawi in the 10m air pistol teams’ contest.
Qamar then also took bronze in the 10m air pistol individual competition.
Earlier, the kingdom’s ace fencers, representing Busaiteen Club, captured a silver medal in the teams’ epee competition, while Ritej Haithem Araoud won bronze in individual foil.
Aside from taekwondo, shooting, and fencing, Bahrain also competed in the Emirates in archery with Riffa and are still playing in basketball with Al Hala Club.
Hala are scheduled to play their final game today when they take on hosts Sharjah Women’s Sports Club at 1pm, Bahrain time.
The kingdom’s representatives have so far lost all five of their previous outings, which were against Ghaz Al Shamal Club from Iraq, Al Amal Sports Club-Al Watan Al Qibli from Tunisia, Khorfakkan Women’s Sports Club from the UAE, Shabab Fuheis Club from Jordan, and Al Fatat Sports Club from Kuwait.
Bahrain’s four clubs are amongst a 63-strong field representing 16 countries across nine sports in this year’s Arab Women Sports Tournament, which is organised by Sharjah Women’s Sports under the patronage of wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Sharjah Family and Community Council chairperson Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi.
