An inmate was sentenced to three years behind bars for splashing hot tea on prison policemen, the High Criminal Court ruled.
The 29-year-old Bahraini ex-con was found guilty of assaulting two officers, but not causing a serious injury. He was serving a 10-year prison sentence over the same charges.
He, along with two co-defendants, was also convicted of publicly insulting the honour of the two policemen, on duty in Jaw Prison.
The 28-year-old and 24-year-old were sentenced to three months in prison, on top of the terms they were already serving.
When the July incident occurred, the two policemen were stationed in the reception office of Jaw Prison building five.
“The defendants came to us, saying they wanted to call their families,” the 37-year-old Pakistani officer told the Public Prosecution.
“When we rejected their request, because they have no permission to do so, the first defendant became very angry.
“He had a cup of hot tea in his hand, and he poured it on me and my colleague.”
A medical report stated that a policeman sustained ‘minor burns’ and redness as a result of the attack, considered a very mild injury.
The three inmates also hurled obscenities at the policemen and insulted their mothers. The attack was caught on security cameras.
A verdict was issued in the case after just one hearing, because the defendants refused to be brought to the courthouse from Jaw Prison. Should they decide to appear in court, they could lodge an objection and face a retrial.
According to his criminal record, the 29-year-old Bahraini from Saar was imprisoned in 2015 for burning an ATM, and received a 10-year jail term for it, and was also found guilty and jailed for other cases.
The 28-year-old from Eker was serving a life sentence, while the 24-year-old from A’ali was in the middle of a 10-year term. All three had been previously convicted of terrorism charges.
