The Saudi medical team of Saudi Conjoined Twins programme successfully separated the Somali conjoined twins, Rahma and Ramla, on Thursday following a complex 12-hour operation in Riyadh.
The surgery was performed at King Abdullah Specialised Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City. It was carried out in eight stages, involving 36 consultants, specialists, and technical staff across anaesthesia, paediatric surgery, urology, orthopaedic surgery, and plastic surgery, supported by a dedicated team of nursing and technical personnel.
Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief centre and head of the program’s surgical and multidisciplinary team Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah said the separation of Rahma and Ramla marks the 68th operation successfully performed by the programme.
He added that over the past 35 years, the programme has cared for 156 conjoined twins from 28 countries, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s leading role in humanitarian and medical initiatives.
Al Rabeeah emphasised that these achievements reflect the Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian values and its ongoing efforts to provide care to people around the world.
He expressed his gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for their continued support of the programme.
Al Rabeeah noted that these consecutive medical milestones demonstrate the Kingdom’s humanitarian and medical leadership both regionally and internationally.
He also praised the dedication of the medical and surgical teams, whose efforts contributed to this achievement, carried out in the name of the nation’s people.
Al Rabeeah congratulated the twins’ family on Rahma and Ramla's safe outcome, praying for their continued health and well-being.
The twins’ parents expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince, thanking them for the specialised medical care provided to their children. They also praised the Kingdom’s hospitality and humanitarian efforts during their stay, wishing Saudi Arabia continued stability and prosperity.
