The Arab League Council yesterday strongly condemned the Iranian attacks on the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq.
In a resolution issued at an extraordinary session, it described the strikes as illegal and unprovoked aggression that constitutes a serious violation of the sovereignty of these states, undermines regional peace and security, and represents a flagrant breach of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and international humanitarian law, as well as a serious threat to international peace and security.
The resolution also condemned the deliberate and illegal targeting of civilian objects and infrastructure, including airports, ports, energy facilities, food security services, service sites, residential areas, and diplomatic missions.
“These acts endangered civilian lives, caused civilian casualties, and resulted in material destruction, in flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law,” it added.
Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani participated in the extraordinary session at the ministerial level, held at the request of GCC countries and Egypt.
In his remarks, Dr Al Zayani stressed the seriousness of the Iranian attacks, which involved thousands of ballistic missiles and drones targeting GCC states and Jordan. He noted that the attacks caused extensive damage to infrastructure, civilian facilities, and residential areas, and spread fear among citizens and residents.
“These Iranian attacks were blatant, unjustified, illegal and unprovoked acts of aggression, and not reciprocal attacks. The use of thousands of ballistic missiles and drones violated the sovereignty, security and stability of Arab states and resulted in the death and injury of hundreds of civilians.
“Such actions constitute a serious breach of international humanitarian law, the Charter of the United Nations, the principles of good neighbourliness, and the historical, religious, cultural and neighbourly ties that bind the region with Iran,” he said.
