Parliament Speaker and chairman of the Executive Committee of the Parliamentary Division Ahmed Al Musallam delivered Bahrain’s address at the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Istanbul, with the participation of representatives from more than 116 parliaments and organisations.
He emphasised that strengthening peace, safeguarding security, and ensuring social justice for future generations are among the core priorities of Bahrain’s national approach and strategic vision.
He noted that this approach is led by His Majesty King Hamad, with the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, adding that the legislative authority in the kingdom places strong emphasis on these priorities through legislation, oversight, and parliamentary diplomacy.
Mr Al Musallam said that the assembly is being held amid recent Iranian attacks targeting Bahrain, GCC countries and Jordan, describing them as a violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as well as an infringement on state sovereignty and the safety of civilians.
He noted that Bahrain, on behalf of GCC countries and Jordan, submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council, adopted on March 11, 2026, as Resolution 2817, with the support of 136 member states, reflecting broad international consensus on safeguarding sovereignty and maintaining international peace and security.
He added that the United Nations Human Rights Council also adopted Resolution 38 of 2026, condemning the Iranian attacks and their implications for human rights, with the support of 106 countries.
The Speaker said that, despite these resolutions, Iran has continued its attacks using ballistic missiles and drones, targeting civilian infrastructure, including airports, ports, hotels, energy and industrial facilities, food security services, residential areas, and diplomatic missions, resulting in significant loss of life and property.
He highlighted that the escalation also included attempts to disrupt navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, posing a threat to international maritime security, energy supplies, and global trade.
Mr Al Musallam emphasised that the current phase requires collective responsibility from the IPU and the international community, particularly the United Nations, to condemn these attacks and ensure compliance with international law and relevant resolutions, while continuing efforts to achieve sustainable development and lasting peace, including a just solution to the Palestinian issue and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
He noted that Bahrain has requested the inclusion of an emergency item on the IPU General Assembly agenda, based on UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and Human Rights Council Resolution 38, to condemn the Iranian attacks targeting GCC countries and Jordan.
He expressed confidence that the IPU will adopt a resolution condemning these attacks, highlighting its role in upholding its principles and responsibilities, particularly under the theme of the assembly, “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations”.
Mr Al Musallam added that the theme reflects the aspirations of peoples seeking peace, security, and a better future.
