It was with much upset that I read the recent GDN report on pets being abandoned by expats fleeing the regional troubles.
A pet is not an accessory, a piece of furniture, or your children’s toy – it is an intelligent and loving being that has been your companion, adjusting with you and your lifestyle.
Abandoning a pet is breaking a heart that trusted you. Being left to roam the streets or tied to a lamppost – betrayed, lonely, hungry, frightened and confused – a dog or a cat would never do that to you.
If you can’t commit to a pet for its whole life, you should never have one to start with.
It is cruelty to the core and no one should ever trust anyone who is cruel to animals.
I fully understand that it takes effort and expense towards pet travel – vaccinations, visa paperwork and planning – but isn’t that all part of being a family?
The money saved on not taking your pet you will lose big time in another way for sure. It is said that you reap what you sow. I hope it never occurs to you to leave your children behind because of closure of airspace, or the bureaucratic hoops you need to jump through.
Congratulations to those who ‘escaped’ the war, you may have saved your peace of mind but your humanity died the moment you abandoned your pet.
