BAHRAIN’S athletics national team get their medal bids underway today at the fourth GCC Games in Doha, Qatar.
The kingdom’s stars in track and field are tipped to be amongst their best bets to climb onto the podium.
Eight athletes will be contesting their respective finals today. The morning session is scheduled for a 7am start while the evening’s events will begin at 6.30pm, both Bahrain time.
Noora Jasim will be competing in the women’s discus throw final today, while Nelly Korir and Zenab Mahamat will be running in the women’s 800m final.
Ahmed Mohamoud will be competing in the men’s high jump final, and Abdelrahman Mahmoud will be contesting the men’s shot put final.
Raihanah Garoubah and Layla Kamal will both be looking to step onto the podium in the women’s 100m final, while compatriot Ali Haji will round up Bahrain’s schedule tonight when he goes for gold in the men’s 100m final.
Bahrain’s delegation at this year’s GCC Games features a total of 219 members, headlined by 146 athletes – 100 men and 46 women – with the athletics team being one of the larger contingents.
The Bahrainis are going for gold in 16 of the event’s 18 sports. Aside from athletics, they are also competing in archery, 3x3 basketball, billiards, boxing, handball, equestrian, fencing, karate, padel, shooting, snooker, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, and volleyball.
