A 16-year-old Emirati boy has tragically drowned after slipping into Ras Al Khaimah's Al Athba dam.
Rashid Jumaa Al Mazrouai passed away after losing his footing while walking along the edge of the dam, falling into the water and drowning.
“The dam was completely full of water, and there was no fence separating the land from the water,” the boy's father, Jumaa Al Mazrouai, told Gulf News.
Rashid and his cousin were riding their bicycles near the dam when their legs became covered in thick mud, prompting them to approach the water to wash off.
“As my son tried to move, he slipped and fell into the water. It was the first time in his life he had ever gone to the dam,” the grieving father continued.
The victim's cousin desperately tried to save him but was unable to pull him up and immediately called family members for help. Unfortunately, it was too difficult to save him due to the challenging water conditions and strong currents.
It took an hour and a half before divers managed to recover the body, according to witnesses.
