A flagship national initiative aimed at nurturing Bahraini talent to meet the future demands of the energy sector was launched by Bapco Energies yesterday.
The integrated energy company unveiled the Nasser Bin Hamad (NBH) Future Energy Leaders Scholarship and Career Development Programme, which will train youngsters in a variety of sectors including nuclear and renewable energy, at an event held at Onyx Rotana hotel in Bahrain Bay.
Aligned with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth Affairs and Bapco Energies chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the programme reflects a sustained commitment to empowering Bahraini youth and securing a pipeline of future leaders who will contribute to shaping the energy landscape of the kingdom.
Shaikh Nasser, speaking in a video message, noted that Bahrain’s greatest strength has always been its people, adding that the programme is not simply about education or training, but about making an unwavering commitment to invest in minds before markets, building the human foundations upon which Bahrain’s energy future will be secured.
Going beyond a conventional scholarship programme, the initiative will offer top high school graduates and bachelor’s degree holders pursuing postgraduate studies a fully integrated development pathway.
Students will gain access to world-class universities and comprehensive academic support, mentorship, hands-on industry training, and work placement opportunities, tailored to meet the evolving demands of the energy sector.
The launch was held in the presence of Finance and National Economy Minister and Bapco Energies deputy chairman Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, US Ambassador Stephanie Hallett and UK Ambassador
Alastair Long, alongside Bapco Energies board members, senior officials and representatives from both the public and private sectors.
“The launch of the NBH Future Energy Leaders Programme marks a proud milestone for Bapco Energies,” Bapco Energies group chief executive Mark Thomas added.
“This initiative represents a direct investment in Bahrain’s future – bridging education and employment while equipping the next generation with the leadership and expertise required to drive the energy transition.
“We are focused on building a pool of high-performing individuals who will carry forward our legacy and shape the future of energy in Bahrain.”
The programme will uphold transparency, fairness and equal opportunity through a rigorous framework, with admission based on merit, competence and demonstrated capability.
Developed in collaboration with the Education Ministry, leading academic institutions, embassies and key strategic partners, it reflects Bapco Energies’ dedication to supporting a knowledge-based economy driven by innovation and sustainability.
The initiative’s key strategic partners include the Crown Prince’s International Scholarship Programme (CPISP).
“The energy sector represents one of the most critical pillars of Bahrain’s future, and ensuring that scholars are equipped to meet its demands is a responsibility we take seriously,” Crown Prince Court political and economic affairs adviser, CPISP board member and financial and administrative committee head Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa added.
“Our collaboration with Bapco Energies is a demonstration of what can be achieved when national institutions align their efforts – channelling the kingdom’s brightest minds towards fields that will define its long-term prosperity and development.”
Applications for the NBH Future Energy Leaders Programme will open on June 15.
