THE Cabinet has welcomed the comprehensive deal reached between the United States and Iran to end the Mideast war.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) includes a framework for negotiation and a ceasefire, an important step towards de-escalation and confidence-building, leading to a comprehensive agreement that contributes to consolidating regional stability and enhancing international peace, it said.
The deal was announced late Sunday night which US President Donald Trump said would open the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane for global energy supplies. The naval blockade of Iran ports would also end. The deal is to signed in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday.
Yesterday’s weekly Cabinet session was chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, at Gudaibiya Palace.
The Cabinet affirmed Bahrain’s appreciation for the tireless efforts of President Trump to support regional security and peace in co-ordination with regional leaders.
The session expressed its appreciation for the constructive diplomatic mediation undertaken by Pakistan, with the support of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, in bridging differences and supporting dialogue.
The Cabinet noted the telephone call received by His Majesty King Hamad from the US President, which reviewed developments related to efforts aimed at reaching the MoU.
The Cabinet expressed its aspiration for a lasting peace agreement in the region that advances regional and global economic sustainability and safeguards security, ensures the protection of civilians and infrastructure and protects international maritime and air navigation.
The Foreign Ministry issued a statement later welcoming the deal.
It also underscored the kingdom’s firm position that any final peace agreement should include an Iranian commitment to international law and the principles of good neighbourliness, respect for the sovereignty of the countries of the region and non-interference in their internal affairs.
Iran should also commit to the protection of freedom of international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the ministry said.
The ministry reaffirmed Bahrain’s commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace in the region.
It stressed the country’s keenness, through its non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council and its current presidency of the GCC, to continue working with its partners and the international community to uphold the principles of international law and promote a culture of peace, dialogue and coexistence.
