ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN’S superstar sprinter and former indoor world champion Kemi Adekoya posted her season’s best in the women’s 400 metres hurdles last night at the Doha leg of this year’s Diamond League, held at the Qatari capital.
Adekoya finished the high-quality race in 53.67 seconds – eclipsing her previous top mark for 2026 of 53.71s, which she set earlier this month in the US.
The 33-year-old was right behind race winner Emma Zapletalova of Slovakia, who took first place in a new world lead and meeting record of 52.30s, while Rushell Clayton of Jamaica was the runner-up in 53.05s.
Completing the classification from fourth through eighth, respectively, were Gianna Woodruff (53.88s) of Panama, Amalie Iuel (54.09s) of Norway, Ashley Miller (54.33s) of Zimbabwe, Ayomide Folorunso (54.85s) of Italy, and Eileen Demes (54.91s) of Germany.
Adekoya was making her debut this campaign in the Diamond League – the premier one-day meeting series held annually by World Athletics, track and field’s international governing body.
Aside from racing on athletics’ international circuit this year, Adekoya is also expected to be amongst the top medal hopefuls of Bahrain’s athletics national team at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, scheduled for September 19 to October 4.
