HANDBALL – BAHRAIN’S youth men’s handball national team are in Kuwait City for an overseas training camp in preparation for the 11th AHF Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship, set to take place August 20 to 31 in Amman, Jordan.
The Bahrainis will be playing a pair of friendly games during their week-long programme.
The Asian Handball Federation’s (AHF) premier under-19 competition is set to feature 12 countries. The Bahrainis are in Group A for the preliminary round alongside defending champions Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Chinese Taipei, and Uzbekistan; while Group B features South Korea, Kuwait, Iran, Syria, India, and hosts Jordan.
The tournament also serves as the AHF qualification event for the 12th IHF Men’s Youth Handball World Championship, with the top four teams securing their places in the worlds, taking place July 29 to August 9 in 2027.
The championship was originally set to be held in Andijan, Uzbekistan but needed to be moved for logistical reasons.
Bahrain’s youth men’s squad, coached by Egyptian tactician Mohamed Abdelrahman Soliman, are set to participate in the tournament for the 10th time, having only missed its 2006 edition.
The Bahrainis had won gold twice in the past – on back-to-back occasions in 2016 and in 2018. The nationals also took the bronze medals in 2010, and have placed in the top five in each of their six other appearances.
