POLICEMEN yesterday thwarted an attempt by a group to attack Sitra police station, the Interior Ministry said.
“The group that attempted to attack Sitra police station was dealt with using legal, proportionate and necessary measures,” it said on its Twitter account.
It was the second attack in as many days and sources said police fired tear gas to disperse rioters who threw firebombs and stones at the police station.
However, according to the sources several such attacks on the police station have been thwarted since the start of the new year. The attacks come a few days after the New Year day armed assault on Jaw prison in which 10 high-profile convicted terrorists managed to flee.
A policeman was killed and another seriously injured.
Meanwhile, a group of students attacked a police patrol vehicle which was on its way to the Sitra police station yesterday.
“Around 10 students left Sitra Intermediate Boys School and started attacking an armoured vehicle with stones,” a witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the GDN.
“The same children had attacked the Sitra police station the day before. They ambushed the armoured vehicle right after leaving their classes.
“The officers fired tear gas to disperse the students. One of the canisters injured a boy who was pelting the officers with stones.”
