BAHRAIN claimed their first victory in the World Handball Championship beating Angola 32-26 in the 23rd place match at the Brest Arena in Paris, reports MAZIN RIZK.
Both teams had finished the group stages in last place, and fell to defeats in the 21-24 place playoff matches. Bahrain were defeated by Chile 35-30 while Angola lost to Japan 37-26.
Bahrain’s Ali Mirza scored eight goals, followed by Hussain Al Sayyad with six goals to give Bahrain the boost, while Angola’s top scorer was Adelino Anderson Pestana who scored six goals, with Sergio Avelino Lopes and Rome Antonio Hebo contributing five each.
Al Sayyad becomes Bahrain’s top scorer in the tournament, taking his tally to 20 goals from a total of 50 shots. Komail Mahfoodh and Mahmoud Abdulqader are tied in second place with 19 goals each – the former taking 55 shots and the latter 27.
Bahrain now equal their highest finish of 23rd place during their previous participation in the 2011 edition in Sweden.
The game was mostly one-sided as Bahrain took the lead in the early minutes and built on the game in an effort to leave Paris with at least a win after six consecutive defeats.
The team, being up against a weaker side, were dominant in most aspects of the game as their tactical superiority was enough to gain physical advantage over their opponents.
Bahrain managed to end the first half leading 15-13.
Bahrain got just one two-minute suspension, given to Al Sayyad after a technical foul.
It is the lowest number of suspensions for Bahrain during the full tournament.
