A CHILD cancer foundation in Egypt saw off competition from 136 other applicants to claim the Isa Award for Service To Humanity, revealed the award’s board of trustees chairman and Deputy Premier Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa.
He revealed the figure as he spoke during the award ceremony last night at the Isa Cultural Centre, Juffair, in the presence of patron His Majesty King Hamad and His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.
It took two years to narrow down the final winner, the Chidren’s Cancer Hospital Foundation Egypt.
“The winning organisation, Chidren’s Cancer Hospital Foundation Egypt, has demonstrated its ability to secure donations and grants from individuals, institutions, organisations and countries through wide-ranging awareness and mobilisation campaigns that touch the hearts of millions of people,” he said.
Shaikh Mohammed also explained the principles behind the award.
“Allegiance to noble values is what underpins this international award and the inspiration behind it is the late Amir, HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, which it is named after, who was a symbol of generosity and altruism,” he said.
“The award’s objectives are to help support these organisations’ purposes and to explain their goals among communities.
“It (the award winner) takes forward the service of human values without requiring or making a distinction between geographical areas, or one category over the other.
“It has excluded itself from any consideration of any ethnic, sectarian or religious affiliation.”
Award jury member Dr Luis Amado said five candidates made it onto the final shortlist.
Meanwhile, a documentary about the late Amir, on whose birthday the award was presented, and another on the winning hospital were screened.
