Manama: Terrorism in Yemen, border conflicts in Palestine and corruption in Europe were just some of the topics discussed at the fourth annual St Christoper’s School Model United Nations (ChrisMUN) conference that ended yesterday.
More than 200 delegates from 12 schools took part in this year’s event, which was held at St Christopher’s Senior School campus in Isa Town.
It was completely student-led, with St Christopher’s School students Yasmeen Jassim and Rea Karani as directors.
Sheran Mendis took the role of secretary general and the deputy secretary general was Zain Al Sharaf.
“Regardless of the stress we all felt, the event was a very wonderful experience,” said 17-year-old Mr Mendis.
“Giving delegates the opportunity to provide their opinion is very important for tomorrow’s leaders.
“They discussed the ideas in a very fresh way.
“As for me I learnt that so much can happen behind the scenes and how to find a solution when things don’t go according to plan.”
Students formed a variety of UN-style bodies for the event including the UN Security Council, the International Court of Justice, the World Health Organisation and the Council of Europe.
Chairs of each council presented awards to delegates for best speaker, best opening speech, most diplomatic delegate and a delegate that is most likely to work in the UN.
During the event, funds were raised for the Bahrain Sickle Cell Anaemia Patient Care Society to build a specialised swimming pool and healthcare facility for patients, a project initiated by St Christopher’s School student Jude Mutawa.
