Bahrain: Robotics was at the forefront of this year’s massive Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) in Dubai.
The annual consumer computer and electronics trade show, exhibition and conference featured thousands of companies presenting their latest products and cutting-edge technologies.
Over the coming years, any number of jobs could be subject to automation with employees replaced by robots, Future Trends Establishment general manager Mohammad Hatamleh told the GDN.
“This is a security robot and the main idea for the device is surveillance,” he said, while introducing one of his company’s latest inventions at GITEX.
“It records 360 degrees while moving and its essential application is in large areas.
“So for example it would be used in airports, marinas or palaces, giving you the possibility to cover large areas that you can’t usually.
“It also has the ability to add another device to it that would be useful, for instance sonar.”
Other applications for the device would be areas where it is difficult or dangerous to have security guards, such as nuclear sites where people might be subject to unhealthy amounts of radiation, Mr Hatamleh said.
“It’s also different to CCTV because in those instances you have fixed cameras – you can move them but it’s always going to prove to have an area that’s out of shot,” he said.
“You’re also constrained by the fact that it has to be connected to other devices in order to record.
“We have two prototypes here at GITEX and they’re the first two in the UAE at the moment.
“GITEX has been our launch, announcing that we have them and hopefully we will start having orders.
“We’re also the agents for the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, so we hope to make it into those markets, too.”
