A fire broke out in a car at a petrol station in Sitra yesterday afternoon.
Sources said the car caught fire as a Bahraini woman at the wheel tried to drive off after filling the petrol tank.
According to eyewitnesses as soon as the fire broke the vehicle was moved to a safe distance and the driver exited the car.
A video circulating on social media showed people trying to put out the flames before Civil Defence personnel arrived minutes later.
“The petrol pump was removed once the tank was full and as she started to drive off the fire broke out,” said a station employee on condition of anonymity.
“This might have been caused by a short circuit in the car or because of the high temperatures but it was not through any fault of ours as we had removed the pump and closed the gas cap.”
An ambulance and a Civil Defence truck arrived within minutes of the fire and a report was filed with the local police to determine the cause behind the fire.
