BAHRAIN will be looking forward to opening their account today with the Kindgom’s star-studded athletic team members getting down to business at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta.
Going for gold on the first day of the athletic events are Abdu Abdo and Elhassa Elabbassi in the men’s marathon and Eunice Chumba and Shitaye Eshete in the women’s 10,000m.
Abdo and Elabbassi will be the first in action at 2am Bahrain time while Eunice will be running at 4pm.
Abbas Abbas and Ali Khamis will be running in the heats of the men’s 400m while Saeed Alkhaldi and Andrew Fisher in the men’s 100m qualifying.
Edidong Odiong and Hajar Alkhaldi will be competing in the women’s 100m qualifying.
Star sprinter Salwa Eid Naser and Iman Essa also begins their campaign today in the women’s 400m qualifying .
Elsewhere today, Bahrain’s bowling team will have a chance to redeem themselves after a disappointing outing in the men’s trios event.
This time, Yusuf Falah, Ahmed Alawadhi, Osama Hasan, Ahmed Algoud, Abdulla Ali and Omar Almudhahki will be competing in the men’s team of six.
In jujitsu, Abdulla Seena Monferadi, Mohamed Aziz Abudrees and Mohamed Jasim Ghareeb will all be in action in their respective classes.
In shooting, Maryam Hassani and Hasan Mohammed will be taking part in the women’s and men’s skeet qualifying.
Meanwhile, several athletes were in action yesterday in cycling, jujitsu and sailing.
In cycling, Razan Soboh finished 12th and last in the women’ 20km individual time trial in a time of five minutes and 27.41 seconds.
She was well behind the winner Ahreum Na (31:57.10) while the silver was claimed by Eri Yonamine of Japan, 16 seconds behind the winner. Wing Lee Leung was third more than two minute adrift.
In jujitsu, Bahrain’s Maitham Sabba lost to Khomidjon Muminov of Uzbekistan 2-5 in the Newaza men’s under-69kg pre-quarter-finals.
In sailing, Bahrain’s Abdulla Janahi finished ninth among 16 sailors in race and improved it to eighth in race two of Laser Standard fleet.
Jun Han Lo of Singapore claimed race one while Jeemin Ha won race two. There are 12 races in all to be completed in this class.
