Bahrain Journalists Association president Ahdeya Ahmed is among 11 women to be honoured in the 2019 Arab Women of the Year Awards.
Created by the London Arabia Organisation, the award ceremony was held at the Langham Hotel, London.
The awards were given to women in a wide range of fields at an event co-hosted by Regents University London, the Bicester Village Shopping Collection and Fast Building Contracting Company.
The other award winners are: Najat Vallaud-Belkacem for achievements in global gender equality (France/Morocco), Mariam Al Aqeel for economic development and leadership (Kuwait), Raya Abirashad for television (Lebanon), Rym Abdulla Al Falasy for family support (UAE), Ons Jabeur for sport (Tunisia), Dania Al Saud for Special Needs Education (Saudi Arabia), Lujaina Darwish for business (Oman), Ayoub sisters for cultural exchange (Egypt/UK), Rana Husseini for social impact (Jordan) and the Abolish 153 Campaign for Social Change (Kuwait).
Highlight
This year’s awards highlighted honour killings and raising the profile of victims.
“We are putting on a united front against honour crimes and remembering their victims,” said Omar Bdour, the chief executive of the awards.
“Participation of British and Arab institutions and companies is also an indication of support for the achievements of Arab women.”
Several influential Arab and British figures including journalists, politicians and ambassadors attended the gala dinner on Wednesday.
Information Affairs Minister Ali Al Rumaihi congratulated Ms Ahmed for winning the award.
He hailed the award as an honour acknowledging the national Press and Bahraini women’s outstanding Press and media strides.
