Another fantastic Ironman here in Bahrain and the first that I did not race in – either as part of a relay or as an individual. Run coach Andy Price and I headed down to support the students on Friday morning. Hoping to calm last-minute nerves.
To have visiting champions of the calibre of Sir Mo Farah, endurance world champion swimmer Chloe McCardel and English cycle champion Mark Cavendish added to the excitement of both the Ironkids event and the 70.3. IRONMAN.
St Christopher’s students were lucky enough to have an inspirational talk from Chloe before the race – urging them to follow their dreams and to aim to be world champions, no matter what obstacles they may need to overcome. We already have a half oceanman champion (5km swim in Thailand) in Drew Keam – it was fantastic for her to meet her idol and chat to Chloe.
The stars of triathlon and The Legends were inspirational. They were at the start line of the Ironkids and Sir Mo was handing out medals. What an experience for young competitors!
I’m not sure there is anywhere else in the world they could be so privileged to meet and chat to athletic royalty such as these and then to watch our own Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Supreme Council for Youth and Sport chairman, race in the 70.3 IRONMAN on Saturday. He really has transformed the island of Bahrain into a triathlon and biking haven.
We can’t thank the Ironman organisers enough for allowing the students to take part in such an awesome event and develop those dreams that world champions need to be the best of the best.
