ALL expatriates working in civil service jobs could be replaced by Bahrainis by the end of the year, the GDN has learned.
Parliament’s services committee chairman Mamdooh Al Saleh revealed yesterday that legislators were informed during a high-level meeting with government ministers that plans were in motion to end all contracts of foreigners by the year’s end, with many already facing the axe.
He told the GDN that assurances were are also made by Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan that all illegal workers will be deported by December.
“Expat teachers in government schools drain the budget and they cost millions of dinars in wages – now is the time to end their contracts with the academic year ending and replace them with Bahrainis in September,” said Mr Al Saleh.
“I mean, all expats should be removed from civil service jobs, but the biggest sector, which is education, should be the first to be addressed.
“There are assurances that by the year’s end all would be replaced by Bahrainis under a government plan.
“That saves money and creates more job opportunities for Bahrainis, which the government told us was in line with cost cutting measures and the Bahrainisation drive.
“Hopefully, the private sector will also introduce similar plans, but first let’s see the promise of deporting illegal workers.”
The meeting was held to discuss the government’s spending from the BD4.3 billion Covid-19 financial support package and the next steps forward.
