The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry has stepped up efforts to protect palm trees against weevils. Specialists working with the Agriculture and Marine
Resources examined 246,000 palm trees and saplings last year to ensure that they are not infested with the snout beetle.
Mr Khalaf said that the rate of monthly infections stood at 0.65 per cent last year, adding that 3,491 visits were conducted to 877 locations, including farms, gardens, streets, family gardens and residential areas countrywide.
He said that 5,612 infested palms and saplings were treated with fumigation, spraying, and injection, the teams have begun to remove 889 of the infected ones. A total of 2,017 pheromone traps for palm weevils had been deployed on farms, adding that around 50,000 insects had been captured.
