A CONVICT’S objection against a 10-year sentence for assault and robbery has been rejected.
The 43-year-old Bahraini was found guilty in February this year by the High Criminal Court of assaulting and mugging a 30-year-old Filipino man on February 1 last year.
A co-defendant, a 38-year-old Bahraini, was also jailed for 10 years.
However, the 43-year-old, who was sentenced in absentia, objected to the jail term on July 6 and refused to appear in court on July 13, despite being in Jaw Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre for another crime.
The GDN previously reported that the victim suffered several fractures in his body and was taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex for treatment.
According to court documents, the victim memorised the car’s plate number and reported the incident to the police.
Both defendants have previously been found guilty on drugs and assault charges.
“Evidence against the 43-year-old proved beyond a reasonable doubt that he was involved in the assault and robbery,” read the High Criminal Court ruling yesterday.
“The victim provided a detailed statement to the Public Prosecution and his statement was further corroborated by CCTV footage documenting the incident.
“A medical report also proved the reported injuries that the victim told the police that he had sustained due to the assault.
“The court is confident in the victim and witness testimonies and although the defendants both denied the charges in court their denial holds no weight as they just wanted to escape punishment.
“The original verdict will remain upheld.”
