A home team comprising Fayiz Rahman, Akshat Pradeep Kumar and Mohammed Kaif took first place in the first Inter-School Artificial Intelligence (AI) Competition staged by the Computer Science Department of the New Millennium School – Bahrain (NMS).
The winning team presented its app titled ‘UWHIZ’ designed with an objective of helping students to question how they used AI and encouraging them to gain a deeper understanding of the subject.
Alwyn Joby, Enric Joji Mathews and Syed Basim from The Asian School took the runners-up spot and Yashpal Mishra, Chris Alan and Basith Khan Mohammed Abdul from Al Noor International, came third.
The ‘AI Continuum 2021’ contest attracted CBSE schools online from around the island. The competition was aimed at nurturing the innovative minds of young students from Grades IX to XII in a bid to prepare them to resolve daily issues using AI.
Experience
Participating students had to develop an AI-based educational app that could improve the teaching-learning process and to make education an easy, affordable and enjoyable experience.
Fifteen students participated, representing Al Noor International School, The Asian School, Bahrain Indian School, The New Indian School, as well as the hosts.
The competition was adjudicated by Dr Jassim Haji, president of the Artificial Intelligence Society, and a pioneer in the field of AI in the kingdom. “It was a wonderful and enriching learning experience for the participants,” organisers said.

The apps developed by the students were judged on the following criteria, including AI ethics, authenticity, innovation and originality, AI capabilities, return on investment, commercial viability and social impact.
Dr Haji said that he ‘appreciated the talents’ of all the students and encouraged them to continue being ‘creative and innovative’.
NMS chairman Dr Ravi Pillai, managing director Geetha Pillai and principal Arun Kuumar Sharma, applauded the event organisers and co-ordinators. They also congratulated the participants and extended their wishes to all mentors and parents.
