MANAMA: Angry landlords are seeking tougher action, including travel bans, against rent defaulters.
They are stressing the need to introduce robust legal mechanisms to safeguard their rights.
Landlords, interviewed by our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej, said they are facing insurmountable difficulties.
In some cases they have to accept payments in small instalments that take too long or wait for years to receive court judgements that tenants sometimes ignore because of lack of stringent enforcement, the landlords complained.
Some of the tenants even leave the country without paying the rent, they point out.
The law must be amended to give them more protection by restricting the ability of tenants to move from one property to another unless rent arrears are fully paid, they said.
Just like not paying a telephone bill, a tenant who does not pay the rent should be prevented from leaving the country, they said.
Several lawyers told Akhbar Al Khaleej that the law is fair to both landlords and tenants but suggested that landlords need to get disagreements notarised as soon as possible.
Defaults or late payments of rent may have increased recently due to the financial crisis brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, sources said.
