THE recent clean-up of beaches in Bahrain (‘3,180kg waste in two hours’, GDN, November 13) clearly shows the level of irresponsible behaviour and actions of our society towards our environment. I THINK we should educate people and increase awareness about how important it is for us to keep our beaches clean. FOLLOWING are my suggestions to keep the beaches in Bahrain clean:
I believe the following actions can be taken to keep our beaches clean:
1. A strong cleanliness awareness campaign that reaches all citizens and residents; school and university students can effectively spread the message.
2. A well-coordinated action by the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) and the municipality to achieve zero waste on beaches. The SCE can do a lot to control the use of plastic bottles and bags. Drastic steps and radical actions are needed from the SCE to eradicate the plastic waste issue to protect the environment for the future generations.
3. MPs should pass a law to protect public beaches and places from irresponsible actions by people who don’t value cleanliness and healthy social life; people will not throw waste in public spaces when they realise that their actions will incur consequences.
4. Deploy adequate community police to monitor beaches and take necessary action.
Together we can have nice beaches in Bahrain; we can have a good time in the evening on beaches with our family and friends to live a good and healthy life.
