THE Jewish community in Bahrain celebrated Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, at its synagogue in Manama last night.
Bahrain’s Jewish community head Ebrahim Nonoo was present along with other members.
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday which celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the larger Syrian army.
It also celebrates a miracle that happened during this time when just a day’s supply of oil allowed the menorah (Hanukkiah or Hanukkah Menorah) in the rededicated temple in Jerusalem to remain lit for eight days.

During the eight-day festival, each night one additional candle is lit by the shamash until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Jewish former ambassador to the US, Huda Nonoo, yesterday posted a photograph on Twitter of her lighting the Hanukkah, a nine-arm candelabra, at the Bahrain Pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai.
Bahrain was once home to around 2,000 Jewish families, many having migrated here from Iraq and other countries, and now there are about 35 remaining.
