MANAMA: Investment in the “Khayrat Al Bahrain” agricultural project in Sudan has been delayed due to political developments taking place in Sudan and the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, said Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Kamal Ahmed.
He underlined Mumtalakat’s ongoing efforts to achieve food security in Bahrain by completing the procedures required for optimal utilisation of the Bahrain Khayrat project once political and security conditions in Sudan are favourable, taking into account the logistical and technical aspects related to the site, which require specialised financial and technical feasibility studies that Mumtalakat seeks to finalise.
In response to a question by Parliament’s second deputy speaker Ali Zayed, the minister said that Mumtalakat stresses the importance of contributing to efforts to achieve food security in the kingdom in line with the company’s objectives and investment vision.
Since the company assumed responsibility for investing in the land allocated to the project in 2017, it has sought to complete the strategic study necessary for its execution despite the logistical and technical challenges related to the land location faced by the company and the subsequent repercussions of the political developments in Sudan in early 2019, as well as the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020.
