A MAN who was jailed for five years for throwing acid on his wife and disfiguring her has lost his final appeal.
The 42-year-old Bahraini defendant was initially jailed for two years by the High Criminal Court in September last year.
In the attack on January 24 last year, the 39-year-old Bahraini victim sustained multiple burns caused by a corrosive chemical on her face, neck and hands in addition to cuts and bruises.
The GDN previously reported that the victim was admitted to hospital where she spent 27 days under treatment and was left with a 15 per cent permanent disfigurement.
She earlier told the court that she was still receiving cosmetic treatment at Salmaniya Medical Complex months after the attack.
The Public Prosecution lodged an appeal at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court which in December last year raised the prison term to five years.
It also ordered a compensation claim to be filed at the High Civil Court.
A final appeal lodged by the defendant at the Cassation Court was kicked out yesterday.
“The court believes he carried out the attack on purpose,” read the final appeal ruling.
“The five-year sentence is appropriate in relation to the crime he has committed.”
The couple were married in 2003 but divorced following incidents of domestic violence.
However, they remarried but divorced once more in 2011.
