FORMER Indian School Bahrain student Sana Asraf has received the Diana Award, one of the highest accolades given to young people for distinguished social or humanitarian achievements.
The 17-year-old secondary school student in Dubai received the award for her work through non-profit organisation For-Her.
She established Project Phoenix aimed at rehabilitating sexual assault victims, create safe spaces for them and provide them with support and therapy.
Sana also carried out initiatives with the goal to get women and girls more involved in technological fields.
She promoted science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education for women as a member of Superposition Dubai, a non-profit organisation.
Sana told the GDN that during her time in Bahrain, from early 2016 to late 2020, she had participated in multiple Indian School Bahrain Model United Nations conferences.
“It motivated me towards social work and speaking up for the greater good,” she said.
“That, in turn, helped me on my journey to becoming a Diana Award recipient.”
The Diana Award honours young people aged nine to 25 who have done work that improved the lives of others.
It was founded in 1999 in memory of the Princess of Wales.
