A UAE-based start-up is looking to to freshen up customer mindset by providing 'ugly' fruits and vegetables at a tempting price.
Produce that do not pass the 'looks' test in most supermarkets generally find their way into landfills, a big source of food waste worldwide.
It is here that EroeGo finds its sweet spot, by providing such produce to sustainability-conscious consumers at a 50 per cent discount on subscription basis.
The company is the brainchild of Nigerian-born Daniel Solomon who has lived in Dubai for over a decade, Khaleej Times reported.
Daily operations of the food tech company involves working with local farmers and fruit and vegetable importers to sell ‘ugly’ fruits and vegetables to customers.
“Whenever I would travel back home to Nigeria, people would always ask for money for food. Here in Dubai, the scene is very different. I would go for brunch and see lots of food getting wasted,” Mr Solomon explained.
"I thought there has to be some way to bring my love for technology and concern for this huge social issue together," he said. This is how EroeGo was born.
To get started, customers can choose a box of fruits and vegetables of their preference and order it online.
EroeGo associates then pack the requested produce and deliver the package.
Each small box consists of 10 types of vegetables and five types of seasonal fruits with a few add-ons, including eggs and coffee.
Each box delivered also provides meals for two people facing hunger.
