Bahrain has been selected among a group of 25 states and is the first among GCC countries to implement the WHO plan to accelerate progress toward reducing obesity. A remote meeting was held to discuss details of the scheme which will be implemented in co-ordination with representatives of the Geneva-based WHO, the regional headquarters for the Middle East and the WHO office in Bahrain.
Chairing Bahrain’s team, Health Ministry assistant under-secretary for public health Dr Mariam Al Hajeri welcomed the country’s ranking for the implementation of the WHO plan to accelerate progress toward reducing obesity. “The achievement reflects Bahrain’s keenness on promoting people’s health through the development of policies aimed to reduce the risk factors leading to non-communicable diseases, particularly obesity”, she said.
Dr Buthaina Ajlan, head of the Nutrition Department, on the Bahrain Nutrition Programme, gave a presentation, highlighting the kingdom’s strategies and plans to eliminate obesity and the legislation and laws issued to support its implementation. Dr Dalal Al Rumaihi, consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist, member of the National Committee for Noncommunicable Diseases and member of the board of directors of the Bahrain Diabetes Association, gave a presentation in which she gave an overview of the role of the Bahrain Diabetes Association in reducing obesity rates among all age groups.
