BAHRAIN’S naval forces assumed command of a task force that deals with Gulf maritime security.
Royal Bahrain Naval Force (RBNF) took charge of Combined Task Force 152 from their Kuwait counterpart during a ceremony held at the Fifth Fleet.
Present were BDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Dhiyab bin Saqr Al Nuaimi and Fifth Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Brad Cooper.
The RBNF commanded CTF 152 for the first time in 2008 and then in 2011.
CTF 152 was set up in 2004 to enhance regional maritime co-operation focusing on illicit non-state actors in the Arabian Gulf, and also operates to protect the international waters around key maritime infrastructure, including oil platforms, from a terrorist threat.
The task force is one of the four that forms the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). The others include CTF 150 (counter-terrorism and maritime security operations), CTF 151 (anti-piracy operations), and CTF 153 focused on maritime security and partner capacity building in the Red Sea, Bab Al Mandeb and the Gulf of Aden.
The 34-nation CMF, which includes Bahrain’s navy, attempts to counter illicit non-state actors on the high seas, promoting security, stability and prosperity in the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Gulf of Oman.
