Bahrain has developed a modern and advanced legislative framework that has helped strengthen and protect human rights, according to Parliament’s foreign affairs, defence and national security committee.
The panel affirmed that the kingdom has made steady progress in promoting and safeguarding human rights across various sectors, while continuing to enhance mechanisms that support these rights.
This came in a statement marking Arab Human Rights Day, observed annually on March 16, which commemorates the entry into force of the Arab Charter on Human Rights in 2008 after its adoption at the 2004 Arab League Summit in Tunis.
Committee chairman MP Hassan Bukhammas said Bahrain has built a ‘distinguished and honourable record’ in protecting and promoting human rights, supported by forward-looking legislation and a commitment to uphold dignity and freedoms for all.
He noted that the kingdom continues to move forward with firm and steady steps to develop and strengthen mechanisms that support the protection of human rights.
Mr Bukhammas praised the vision and initiatives of His Majesty King Hamad, saying they have helped lay the foundations for a modern and progressive state where people live with dignity and their rights and freedoms are safeguarded.
“The wise leadership and pioneering initiatives of His Majesty have significantly contributed to reinforcing human rights in Bahrain, enabling the kingdom to become a modern and progressive nation where everyone lives with dignity and where rights and freedoms are preserved,” he added.
Mr Bukhammas highlighted the distinctive character of Bahraini society, describing it as one rooted in tolerance, coexistence and openness throughout the kingdom’s long history.
“We are proud of the values that define Bahraini society in all its diversity – values of coexistence, tolerance and cultural openness, as well as support for religious freedom for everyone,” he said.
“These principles have made Bahrain a global example of successful coexistence, moderation and respect for human dignity.”
He also pointed to the ongoing role of Bahrain’s Parliament in strengthening the legislative and rights framework through co-operation with relevant authorities.
“The legislative authority continues to work closely with national institutions to develop and improve the legal framework in ways that reflect respect for rights and freedoms,” Mr Bukhammas said.
He added that Bahrain’s commitment to human dignity stems from its deep-rooted civilisational heritage and the long-standing traditions of harmony and mutual respect among its people.
“The kingdom has consistently emphasised the importance of promoting tolerance and respecting human dignity, values that remain central to Bahrain’s legislative and social development,” he said.
MPs also congratulated His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, while highlighting governmental role in protecting, enhancing and strengthening human rights’ practices.
